Question 1

What is the best pricing formula for handmade products?

Accepted Answer

The gold standard formula is: Retail Price = (Direct Materials + Packaging + Labor + Overhead) ÷ (1 - Platform Fee % - Target Margin %). This guarantees marketplace transaction cuts are accounted for in the retail price rather than eroding your wages.

Question 2

How much should I pay myself per hour as a maker?

Accepted Answer

We recommend paying yourself at least $20 to $35 per hour depending on your craft's skill requirement. Never treat your time as free; unpaid maker labor is the primary reason craft businesses fail.

Question 3

How do marketplace fees like Etsy affect my prices?

Accepted Answer

Etsy takes approximately 9.5% + $0.45 across transaction fees (6.5%), payment processing (3% + $0.25), and listing fees ($0.20), plus fees on shipping. Using a reverse fee calculator ensures your listing price absorbs these deductions cleanly.

Question 4
